For my daughters (and yours)

Colbie Caillat says the word “Try” 55 times in the song, that’s a lots of trying. Makes me tired just thinking of saying “try” 55 times, though the repetition does deem this an easy song to memorize. Applauding the simplicity of the message –

Like yourself. And you don’t have to try so hard for others to like you.

Coupled with a dynamically understated video featuring strong women taking off (their make-up), I had to let my daughters watch it over and over again.

The summary for me is the final line of “Don’t you like you? Cos’ I like you.” Just having one supporter and fan in anyone’s life builds self-esteem and injects positive feels; enabling you to spread your wings just a little wider, fly a little longer, fall a little milder.

When was the last time you told someone she is liked as she is? For those of you who have daughters – when did you last tell your daughter you love her unconditionally? I just told mine 10 minutes ago (as I encouraged them to go to sleep, not try but to go get some rest to recharge their energy for tomorrow).

Colbie Caillat - Try

Put your make-up on
Get your nails done
Curl your hair
Run the extra mile
Keep it slim so they like you, do they like you?

Get your sexy on
Don't be shy, girl
Take it off
This is what you want, to belong, so they like you
Do you like you?

You don't have to try so hard
You don't have to, give it all away
You just have to get up, get up, get up, get up
You don't have to change a single thing

You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try
You don't have to try

Mm, mm

Get your shopping on, at the mall, max your credit cards
You don't have to choose, buy it all, so they like you
Do they like you?

Wait a second,
Why, should you care, what they think of you
When you're all alone, by yourself, do you like you?
Do you like you?

You don't have to try so hard
You don't have to, give it all away
You just have to get up, get up, get up, get up
You don't have to change a single thing

You don't have to try so hard
You don't have to bend until you break
You just have to get up, get up, get up, get up
You don't have to change a single thing

You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try

You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try
You don't have to try

Mm, mm

You don't have to try so hard
You don't have to, give it all away
You just have to get up, get up, get up, get up
You don't have to change a single thing

You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try
You don't have to try

Take your make-up off
Let your hair down
Take a breath
Look into the mirror, at yourself
Don't you like you?
'Cause I like you
