    Quasquicentennial

    February 9, 2026 by

Quasquicentennial marks a 125th anniversary, derived from quasqui- (one and a quarter) and centennial (100 years).

Since taking on the School Governing Body (SGB) chair position for Erin's primary school in January 2024, I never expected the amount of perseverance and long hours required. There have been frequent moments of frustration as we struggle to keep up as overworked staff and parent volunteers, with at times a lack of accountability and inertia. Then again, a lot of good has been achieved when the team works well together—from the SGB team of 10, to the extended Kronendal staff of 30, to the families of our current 350 learners, to the over 5,000 learners who have graduated from the school since 1901.

Our 125th Celebration takes place on Saturday, 28 February 2026. It marks a special day for our battle cry to continue waving the flag, bringing back the pride, and uniting us all in the process. The journey has been difficult and tiring. With 19 days to go before the big day, I'm taking this moment to remind myself that if the goal isn't scary, it likely isn't grand enough. So this concern and fear I'm feeling is precisely how we know we're aiming for something huge with multiple challenges. May we come out of it stronger and proud. Besides, how many 125th anniversaries can we be part of in our lives? The press release below rings with truth.

Kronendal Primary Celebrates 125 Years of Inclusive Education and Community Spirit

HOUT BAY – Nestled in the heart of our vibrant valley, Kronendal Primary School is celebrating 125 extraordinary years of shaping young minds and building community ties. From its humble beginnings in 1901, when it first opened its doors to a handful of eager learners amid the fynbos hills, Kronendal has stood firm as Hout Bay's unwavering commitment to quality education.

Picture this: a one-room schoolhouse evolving into a thriving hub that has educated generations through wars, economic shifts, and cultural transformations. This milestone isn't just about dates on a timeline; it's a testament to Kronendal's rock-solid dedication to nurturing every child's potential.

"We've always believed education is the great equalizer," says Principal Mr Nathan Levendal, whose team has successfully steered the school through modern challenges like hybrid learning during the Covid years.

Today, the school's vibrancy shines through its seasoned teachers and new staff, a dynamic crew blending decades of wisdom with fresh energy. "Our educators are the heartbeat," shares veteran teacher Ms. Kerry McCraw, who has watched three generations pass through her classroom.

They're supported by state-of-the-art facilities: computer lab, expansive sports fields, a 25-metre swimming pool, 2 tennis courts, a library, a special educational needs (SEN) team, and tutors. Kronendal serves as a vital meeting place where the diverse communities of Hout Bay converge. Our learners come from every corner of the valley, creating a unique environment where families from all walks of life strive together toward excellence. We are committed to providing holistic learning and for true diversity to thrive.

Inspired by the words of Marianne Williamson, also used by Nelson Mandela, we challenge our learners: "Who are you not to shine?" We believe it is our collective responsibility to let our light shine positively, lighting the path for others and empowering the broader community. By teaching our children to know, respect, and work with one another, we are equipping them to cope with the demands of life and producing responsible citizens dedicated to making the world a better place.

Our success stories include Richard Levi (English/South African cricketer who played for Western Province, Cape Cobras, and Northamptonshire), Precious Kofi (a South African actress and producer best known for hosting her own TV show called Keeping It Real With Precious), Hayley Preen (a South African racing cyclist, former equestrian and triathlete, who most recently rode for UCI Women's Continental Team Torelli), Dylan Hadzigrigoriou (Lead Project Manager for Tech Solutions in London and coach for Harlequins and Dorking Rugby Football Club). These and so many others prove that Kronendal launches legacies.

Celebrations kick off with our Partners Pavilion, a community fair on Saturday, 28 February 2026, with our partners' participation, alumni reunions, sports events, and a sunset picnic concert by artist and local resident Ard Matthews. Locals are invited to enjoy a historical exhibit at the school hall.

Take a walk down memory lane and add your own special memories. "Kronendal is integral to Hout Bay's success, rooting learners in excellence and social awareness," says School Governing Body Chair Ms. Woon Ziady.

In an era of constant change, Kronendal Primary reminds us of the importance of community spirit, timeless values, trailblazing alumni, passionate people, and facilities that rival the best. Here's to 125 years – and 125 more of excellence.
